South Shore Market

Location: South Shore, Chicago
Client: Withheld
Scope: Architecture (Adaptive Reuse)
Progress/Year: 2020

The South Shore Market is a community space for local vendors, restaurants, and South-side businesses. This concept study proposed an adaptive re-use approach for a client to study the possibility of transforming an existing building into a vibrant marketplace and commmunity anchor. Small-scale vendor spaces allow for new businesses to catalyze and grow. A flexible central space allows for performances and gathering, and a new skylight floods the long-span building with natural light. Reaching out to the lot next door across a private alley, new outdoor space is created for summertime public use. A warm, industrial palette and reclaimed Chicago common brick highlight local building materials.
